Boardroom guru, Mr. Gamaliel Onosode who died last week aged 82, is sorely missed by many who admired his strict principles and his sense of purpose. Even as a public officer, Onosode is remembered for his policy of self-sacrifice and personal discipline.
An alumnus of the University College, Ibadan, where he studied classics, he topped his class in Latin and Greek but he is better remembered for his flawless deliveries in English grammer and the footprints he left in the management of several of Nigeria’s blue chip companies.

The young Onosode was raised by parents who were strict disciplinarians. He enthused that he and his siblings were brought up to render service cheerfully as part of their contribution to the well-being of the family,”. He believed in those principles till he died. A man of probity, he walked through several multinational companies where he served as Managing Director, chairman or board member.
The son of a Baptist minister, Onosode epitomized humility and modesty. A man of above-average means, he had lived out his life on earth in the middle-class Surulere community in Lagos, refusing to flaunt his wealth in high-brow areas like Ikoyi and Victoria Island. With dozens of awards from reputable universities, it is instructive that till he died, he preferred to be referred to by the simple title of “Mr”.
An Urhobo from Ekiugbo in Delta State, Onosode was one of the most successful public figures in all of Nigerian history. For his love for public service, he had joined politics and twice under the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, he sought rather unsuccessfully to become the President of Nigeria.
